North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster: Christopher Costner is listed as a Private in Co. K, 49th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. Born in Lincoln County and resided in Cleveland County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Lincoln County at age 35, March 15, 1862. Died in hospital at Peterburg, Virginia, on or about July 16, 1862, of "typhoid febris".⁴

The 1850 census of Cleveland County, NC lists Daniel Costner (age 48, farmer) as head of household for family #828 with Sarah (47), Christopher (22, farmer), Jacob (20, farmer), Elizabeth (18), Joseph (16), James (12), Sarah (12), and Rachel (7). All are listed as born in North Carolina.
The 1850 census of Cleveland County, NC lists Narcissa Bryan (age 44) as head of household for family #902 with Margaret (20), John (18), James (16), Elizabeth (14), Samuel (12), William (10), and Matilda (8). Narcissa through Elizabeth are listed as born in South Carolina. The three youngest children are listed as born in North Carolina.
The 1860 census of Cleveland County, NC lists Christopher Costner (age 31, miller) as head of household for family #234 with Margaret A. (29), Elizabeth J. (7), Mary M. (5), Joseph (3), and Elphus S. (1, male). Margaret A. is listed as born in South Carolina. All others are listed as born in North Carolina.

The 1880 census of Cleveland County, NC lists Margaret Costner (age 49, keeping home) as head of household for family #134 in Township #11 with Jane (daughter, 24), Mary M. (daughter, 22), Joseph C. (son, 20, farmer), Sarah A. F. (daughter, 17), and Jeannet M. Bryant (mother, 81). Margaret Costner and Jeannet M. Bryant are listed as born in South Carolina. All others are listed as born in North Carolina.

The 1920 census of Cleveland County, NC lists Margaret A. Costner (age 87, widowed) as head of household for family #146 in Township #11 with Jane (daughter, 66, single). All are listed as born in North Carolina. Margaret is listed as the owner of her home which is free of mortgage.

Notes

Christopher Costner's Civil War compiled service record¹ indicates he died of "Typhoid Febris" in the "South Carolina Hospital" in Petersburg, Va., on July 16, 1862 as a private in Company K of the 49th N. C. Regiment. An online search performed in June 2011 of the surname Costner in the records of the Blandford Cemetery of Petersburg, Virginia returned the following record which indicates that a "C. Costner" of Company K, 49th North Carolina Regiment was buried in the "Memorial Hill" section of the cemetery. I have not visited Blandford Cemetery, but understand Memorial Hill to be a mass grave where 30,000 Confederate soldiers were buried:

The Cleveland County Index to Vital Statistics lists the death of a Margaret Costner of Township #11 with a date of Feb 13, 1926 (her tombstone indicates Feb 13, 1925!). The name of her parent is listed as Lewis Bryant. A reference is listed to Book 9, page 438. (Reminder: Try to obtain an actual copy of the death certificate to see if it provides more information.)
