Hoffman Book:
- The book Our Kin by Miles Laban Hoffman (1915)2
contains an extensive listing
of the descendants of Adam Costner who immigrated from Germany to American prior to the
Revolutionary War. Listed among the descendants of Adam Costner is a Daniel Costner, Jr. who
married Sarah Kiser. Below is a summary of the information Laban included in his book
regarding this Daniel Costner, Jr. Note that this is the information as it was provided by Hoffman.
He did not include any references to supporting documentation, and
I am not able to confirm some of his points. I have not seen any original record that
confirms the Daniel Costner who married Sarah Kiser was the son of another Daniel Costner, Sr.
(I suspect this may be an error).
And I have also not seen any original record that confirms a
Daniel Costner was the son of a David "Stiff" Costner (while this may be true, I have not
yet found evidence of this).
- Laban's book lists Daniel Costner, Jr. who married
Sarah Kiser. Their children were
Christy who married a Bryant and had five children,
Jno. who married a Carpenter and had seven children,
Levi who married a Gales and had eight children,
Jacob who married a Gladden and had eight children,
Susan who married a Grigg and had eight children,
Elizabeth who married a Grigg and had eight children,
Joseph who married a Hendrick and had four children,
Sarah who married a Wright and had seven children,
Rachel who married a Ledford and had six children, and
Jonas who died single.
- It further indicates that all six sons of Daniel Costner and Sarah Kiser went to the
Confederate Army and only two returned.
- The father of Daniel Costner, Jr. is listed as Daniel Costner, Sr.
- The father of Daniel Costner, Sr. is listed as David "Stiff" Costner.
- The father of David "Stiff" Costner is listed as Thomas Costner who was born in York
County, Penn., in 1747 and fought in the Revolutionary War.
- The father of Thomas Costner is listed as Adam Costner who came to America from Germany.
Notes:
- Census Data:
- The 1850 census of Cleveland County, NC lists Daniel Costner (age 48, farmer)
as head of household for family #828 with Sarah (47), Christopher (22, farmer),
Jacob (20, farmer), Elizabeth (18), Joseph (16), James (12), Sarah (12), and Rachel (7).
All are listed as born in North Carolina.
- The 1860 census of Cleveland County, NC lists Daniel Costner (age 57, farmer)
as head of household for family #248 with Sarah (57), Joseph (24), James (20),
Sarah A. (18), and Rachel (16).
All are listed as born in North Carolina.
- The 1870 census of Cleveland County, NC lists Daniel Costner (age 68, farmer)
as head of household for family #3 in Township #9 with Sarah (67, keeping house),
Rachel (27, without occupation), and Monroe Grigg (14, farm laborer).
All are listed as born in North Carolina.
- The 1880 census of Cleveland County, NC lists Dan Costner (age 77, farmer)
as head of household for family #24 in Township #9 with Honor (57, wife, keeps house).
Both are listed as born in North Carolina.
- Daniel Costner's first marrige was to Sarah Kiser based on a Lincoln County marriage bond dated
13 Feb 18231.
The spellings used on the marriage bond were Daniel Caustner and Sarah Kizer.
The bondsman was listed as Michael Bess (Best). The bond was witnessed by V. MacBee.
Sarah's date of death is unknown to me, but it must have been sometime between 1870 and 1880
based on Sarah being listed with Daniel in the
1870 census, and Daniel being listed with another wife in the 1880 census (see below).
- Daniel Costner's second marriage was to Honor O. Felmet, the widow of Doras Felmet.
Honor is listed as "Onor Felmet" (female, age 48) in the 1870 census only three households away from
Daniel and Sarah Costner. Also listed in her household is her possible son
"Doras R. Felmet" (male, age 21).
In the 1880 census, Honor is listed as the 57 year old wife of Dan Costner.
I have not looked up the
record myself, but am told there is a marriage record in Cleveland County, NC dated
18 Apr 1878 which confirms their marriage.
Honor died as Honor O. Felmet on 18 Oct 1911 and is buried in the Zion Hill Baptist Church
Cemetery in Spartanburg, South Carolina (see
findagrave entry).
- The original will of Daniel Costner3
is preserved in the North Carolina State Archives. Daniel Costner signed his will on 19 Sept 1881
and it was probated on 6 Jan 1882, implying that he likely died sometime between those two dates:
- Children named by Daniel Costner in his will were sons Joseph Costner and Jacob Costner,
and daughters Susan Grigg, Elizabeth Grigg, Sarah Wright, and Rachel Ledford.
- In his will, Daniel Costner named his wife as Honor O. Costner. Daniel provided that his
wife would retain his homestead for the remainder of her life, and that after her death the
homestead should be sold and equally divided between his six named children.
- Jacob Costner and Joseph Costner were named as the executors of Daniel's estate.
- The witnesses for Daniel's will were "R. L. Allen" and "B. Justice".
- The November 2012 issue of the Bulletin of The Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County contains
an article titled "The Origins of Lorentz Kayser". The article details a Lorentz Kayser who left a will
in Lincoln County, NC dated 25 January 1786. The will names his wife Sarah and sons Laurence Kiser, Joseph Kiser,
George Kiser, and Adam Kiser. It is unknown if this family is related to the Sarah Kiser who married
Daniel Costner.
