Civil War Records

North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster: William Long is listed as a Private in Co. H, 34th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. Born in Cleveland County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Cleveland County at age 19, October 1, 1861. Wounded at or near Gaines' Mill, Virginia, June 27, 1862. Discharged on March 18, 1863 by reason of disability.⁴

• The 1870 census of Rutherford County, NC lists a W. L. Long (age 28, farmer) as head of household number 134 in the Golden Valley section of the county. Also listed in the household are Susan C. (age 27), Adra E. (age 4), Sarah [? S.] (age 2), and Nancy C. (age 1). All are listed as born in NC.
• The 1880 census of Rutherford County, NC lists a William L. Long (age 38, farmer) as head of household number 82 in Golden Valley township. Also listed in the household are Susannah C. (age 37, wife), Adar E. (age 14, daughter), Sarah L. (age 12, daughter), Nancy K. (age 10, daughter), Martha E. (age 7, daughter), Mary C. (age 5, daughter), John C. (age 3, son), Allice D. (age 1, daughter). All are listed as born in North Carolina.
